SEAS BlogStudents Engaged in Aquatic Sciences
August 20 It's a New YearHello Hello!
It's a new school year and that also means a new year of SEAS! There was a recent publication of a newsletter from IEMANYA OCEANICA. This was the organization from whom we adopted our great white shark. The awesome part was that SEAS had its own section in the newsletter. It told of what the organization was about, what it does, and lastly, our adoption of the shark. This marks a fantastic start to the year and hopefully is a sign of great things to come. April 29 End of the Year Mishmash Wow, so it's already the end of the year. That's just insane. Anywho-on to MSCI-related awesomness. In SEAS news, I (Lee Wyrobek) am the new Secretary for the 07-08 school year so Adena has been filling me in on all the stuff that I have to do and part of that is updating the blog so here I go! This past Friday was Discovery Day and the MSCI Picnic. For Discovery Day, Marine Science dominated the Biological Sciences category. (For those that don't know, Discovery Day is when students from every discipline can present their research and they can win fantabulous awards). Congrats to everyone that won!!! (Might I add that most of the winners in that category were SEAS members? That's right we rock!)
The picnic was amazing!!! We met in the patio of GSRC and decorated it with balloons and had prizes, food, face painting, a live band, and we even had awesome weather. There was a huge turnout which made the whole thing even better and everyone seemed to be having a good time. Adena posted photos (also posted Discovery Day photos) and then we also have photos from Trevor Surges, new member and photographer, so I think that the event was well documented. If anyone has anything else they would like me to post send it to me at gypsygrl86@aol.com or seasblog@hotmail.com.
That's it for now. If you have anything send it to me and I will post it, especially if you're doing something awesome over the summer.
(In Adena tradition) SEA you later :) April 01 YAY for Good Times with SEAS!So... I just received an EXCELLENT e-mail from our president that I wanted to share with everyone again! Last week, we were the appreciative hosts of Dr. Jaroslow from Woods Hole's prestigious SEA Semester program. We greatly enjoyed his visit and had a great time meeting with him to discuss the program. Hopefully some of our underclassmen will be applying ;) But anyways, he apparently had just as great of a time with us as we did with him! To quote a quotation from a quotation: "Direct Quote from Gary Jaroslow: ' I just wanted to tell you that I had a fantastic visit. It was jam packed with meetings with: Jennifer Engle (Dir, Study Abroad), Brianna Timmerman, Bob Thunell, Joe Quattro and Steve Stancyk. Everyone gave me a welcome reception. However, the truly big highlight for me was getting to know your SEAS students. I was blown away by Katrina and her gang. They gave me a tour, guided me to appointments, took me out to lunch and organized a packed house for the info session. They were all so pleasant, motivated, dedicated, energetic and surprisingly mature. You guys are doing something very right to nurture these bright young folks. ' " I always knew we were "bright young folks" but now WHOI knows too! Way to go guys! Dr. Yi Chao will be visiting with us this Wednesday so let's try to see if we can earn NASA's approval as well ;) February 27 OH MY GOSH WE HAVE PICTURES!!!So... THANK YOU VERY MUCH MADAME PRESIDENTE FOR THE PICUTRES FROM PRITCHARD'S!!! YAYAYAYAYAYAY!!! I love when people send me stuff :) SO.... I tried to attach the photos but SEASBlog isn't liking their size so they are all in the album though so go check them out there!! I can only fit about 2 attached to this entry but all the rest are well-placed in our ever growing photo album. In other news, I attended the sea turtle conference in Myrtle Beach this past weekend and it great times. If you have an opportunity to attend a scientific conference: 1) GO 2) make it the sea turtle conference If you want details, shoot me an e-mail b/c I don't want to bore everyone with my nerdy-turtle-talk. ~blogger out
